Winchester 556 Green Tip Description
If there’s one rifle ammo you can rely upon to take your shooting competitions and range training to higher levels, it’s the Winchester M855 Green Tip ammunition. Designed to deliver reliability, excellent accuracy at medium ranges, and high barrier penetration, this round is well-known for its top performance.
This 5.56x45mm NATO cartridge is commonly used in military-style rifles such as the AR-15; in fact, it is the current US military cartridge which is also currently being used in all of NATO’s 5.56 Standard Issue weapons.
The Winchester 5.56 Green Tip, as ammo designed specifically to increase hard barrier penetration, comes with a projectile which lead core boasts a steel “penetrator”, and the tip of this bullet is coated with green paint to denote or indicate this.
Weighing 62 grain, this projectile leaves the muzzle (of standard 16-inch barrels) with an approximate velocity of 3060 fps, and energy of 1288 ft./lbs. Unlike projectiles in standard FMJ ammunition, the Winchester M855 bullet is able to more effectively penetrate light-gauge metal such as 3/8-inch steel plates, light body armor, auto glass, or thin wooden walls, at distances of up to 500 yards.
The lightweight bullet has a flat trajectory and produces significant recoil, which makes it less accurate at longer distances. That is why the Winchester 556 Green Tip ammo, most suitable for rifles with a 1 in 7-inch twist rate, is ideal for use at medium ranges, and typically not used for long-range shooting.
A robust brass casing that is heat-treated to improve its wear resistance houses the projectile, and a reliable centerfire primer comes standard.
On the whole, the Winchester 5.56 Green Tip ammo delivers positive functioning, and will cycle your AR rifle optimally.

Winchester M855 Additional Information
Bullet Type
As the projectile loaded in the M855 is full metal jacket (with stripper clips), the Winchester 5.56 Green Tip cartridge tends to feed more reliably in a wider variety of firearms – more than jacketed hollow point (JHP) ammunition for example.
Primer Style/Location
The primer featured in this ammo is referred to as a “Centerfire” primer due to its location: It sits right in the middle of the casing base, unlike a Rimfire primer which is contained in the rim of the ammo casing.
Application
While the Winchester M855 is best suited for target shooting and military/combat applications, it is also effective when it comes to home defense; however, it’s not recommended for this purpose. This is because, as it was mainly designed to increase barrier penetration, it can easily over-penetrate not only the target, but the walls in a standard dwelling.
A better option than the Winchester 556 Green Tip for home defense would be the Winchester M193 55gr ammo, which delivers much better disruption in tissue, but much less penetration.
Restrictions
Bear in mind that, due to its penetrator design and potential to cause more damage than traditional ammunition, the use of this rifle ammo may be restricted by some organizations, or regulated by local, state, and federal laws. So before using the Winchester M855, a good idea is to familiarize yourself with local laws and regulations regarding its use.

“I’ve been using this ammo for years and it’s always been consistent and shoots really well. I’ve never found any dented cases even though its loose in a box which is different but it’s to be expected since its government grade. All in all, it’s a wonderful ammo and I try to get it whenever I can find it at a good price.”
