Gerber Downrange Tomahawk Description
The Downrange Tomahawk is, as Gerber put it, “a marvel of simplicity,” designed with “a single-minded goal: to settle the breaching argument.” A versatile tool made in Portland, Oregon for professionals, it offers an axe, hammer head, and pry bar, all in one very handy package.
With its rock-solid build and three-tiered approach to tactical breaching, no barrier is a match for the Gerber Downrange. The 420HC stainless steel, Cerakote™ finished axe head has a beveled edge that is ideal for quite demanding chopping tasks, and which can chop through drywall and turn walls as well as doors to splinters. This cutting edge comes blunt, but can easily be sharpened if necessary.
Present at the back of the axe head is a hammer, and this Gerber Downrange Tomahawk hammer will enable you get through hinges, locks, doorknobs and similar obstructions capable of slowing down your advance.
The third approach to tactical breaching comes in form of a pry bar built into the end of the handle. Controlled by a cutaway grip in the axe head, this pry bar is quite hefty, and you only require a combination of physics and force to pry your way to your target with the cutaway handle in the Gerber Tomahawk axe head serving as leverage. Integrated into the pry bar is a nail puller which comes in handy as well.
Desert tan in color, the G-10 handle features scales designed in such a way as to offer a comfortable grip, and ensure that during use, the tool will remain firmly in your hands regardless of the conditions.

Gerber Tomahawk Additional Information
Design
As the epitome of simplicity and efficiency, this breaching tool has been designed with no moving parts to jam or break, and no extraneous gimmicks to get in the way. The well-thought-out design that symbolizes three-quarters of a century of Gerber craftsmanship makes the Gerber Downrange Tomahawk excel at solving serious problems.
Build Material & Strength
420HC steel is a high carbon stainless steel that offers maximum corrosion resistance, in addition to superior hardness and strength. As its blade and other steel parts were made with this excellent material, the Gerber breaching axe is unquestionably rugged; can be used in rough environments and during tough jobs; and won’t break under pressure.
Finish
Abrasion and chemical resistant, the Cerakote™ finish applied to the steel parts of this tool further increases durability. Beyond protection, the finish also enhances the appearance of the Gerber Tomahawk, and makes the steel non-reflective.
Handle Material
G-10 is a composite material comprising layers of fiberglass cloth which is impregnated with epoxy resin and then compressed and baked. The laminated material is impervious to water and wetness, as well as extremely durable, which is why is has since been a popular material for making the handle of knives and other tools such as the Gerber Downrange Tomahawk.
Carry
Since it can’t possibly fit in a pocket, the practical tool comes with an equally practical MOLLE-compatible sheath designed to readily attach to your pack, standard webbing or body armor; this sheath of nylon construction makes the breaching axe quite easy to carry to wherever its services are required:

Bear in mind that MOLLE stands for Modular Lightweight Load-carrying Equipment; and the Gerber Tomahawk sheath is considered “MOLLE-compatible” because it utilizes modular attachment methods and is usable with U.S. general issue MOLLE components.
Included as part of the sheath system are kydex covers for the axe head and pry bar at the opposite end.
There’s also a hole drilled into the Gerber Downrange, just above the handle and close to the pry bar, and through this you can thread a lanyard or fob if you ever have the need for such.
Warranty
As testament to their unrelenting commitment to quality and service, Gerber proudly offers a limited lifetime warranty on all their products, including, of course, the Downrange Tomahawk.

Gerber Downrange Tomahawk Reviews
Now it’s time to read some reviews of the Gerber Tomahawk. The following will give you a pretty good idea of what actual users think of the breaching axe.

“Great tool for many jobs, very well built and sturdy fairly thick full tang bar very durable. The only issue i had what so ever was the fact that it comes dull, im not a professional blade sharpener so i was hesitant to sharpen it myself but i did a good job none the less but thats my only complaint i REALLY wish it was sharpened well first to give me a starting point.”

“One of the best Gerber products! I’m glad we can always find the best products and the best prices at Optics Planet! They Rock! This axe is more than a axe, its tactical features and design are just great.”

“Great product and well made. Not very sharp but that depends on how you plan to use it. If you are splitting some wood for the camp fire and removing nails or as a pry bar. Take about 10 minutes to sharpen with a wheel grinder. For a real sharp blade, get out your stone and oil. Holds a really good edge when sharpened
If you are using it a breaching tool. Run with what they give you as there is no need to sharpen it.
Overall well construction and hasn’t bent prying open and old wooden shed”

“not the tool if you want to chop down a Redwood but…..this is a strong multi function axe and supreme leaver tool …. dont let its good looks con you…..its a monster”

“Solid well engineered and constructed axe. Have used it for various tasks related to bushcraft (haven’t breached a door with it). One thing to note is the axe does not come with an edge on it. Possibly because its not meant to be used as a regular hand axe. It will however take an edge if you use a professional sharpener the first time (after that you can hone by hand). The only reason I give this product 4 stars is the sheath. It is made of a flimsy consumer grade nylon and will not strap to a molle pack with any force. A quick tug will rip it from you pack. Also, the retaining snaps that hold the axe to the sheath are light duty and do not hold the axe securely. Count on having to rig up a better way to secure the axe to your pack or gearbag.”

“Everytime you buy something this pricey, the moment before you commit, you’re thinking “is it really worth it?”. And then every moment after that, you’re thinking to yourself “did I really need it?”. Until you get it. This tool is well worth the money – its hard-use, multi-purpose, light, and easy to grab in a pinch. Gerber’s quality and committment to craftsmanship never ceases to amaze me. Way to go Gerber – so long as they are made in the USA, I will continue to support them.”
