Cold Steel Viking Axe Description
Straight out of Cold Steel’s new state-of-the-art forging facility comes the CS-89VA Viking Axe, a truly exceptional offering that embodies not just the manufacturers’ long time belief in the cutting power of a well-designed Viking battle axe, but also their advanced technical ability in crafting such a tool.
This fighting axe comes ready for action with a 1055 carbon, drop-forged steel blade that is formidably long and thin. 10 inches wide and fully polished with clear lacquer, the cutting surface terminates in two sharp “horns” or points, and the Cold Steel Viking Axe edge is hand-sharpened to an impressive degree.
Made in Maine from the best hickory available, the 48-inch-long handle of this Tomahawk axe further highlights its appeal. The considerable length, extreme toughness and resilience of the shaft ensures that leverage, strength and dexterity of movement are maximized.
Overall, the Cold Steel Viking Battle Axe is a truly modern interpretation of the two-handed Viking war axe which any Viking or admirer of the Scandinavian seafaring warriors would want in their arsenal.
Bear in mind that this tactical fighting axe comes unassembled, and the head or blade will need to be carefully mounted onto the haft and screwed into place with precision. The shaft, screws and assembly instructions are all included in the package.

Cold Steel Viking Axe Additional Information
Design
The result of several years of extensive development and refinement, the Viking Axe can be a surprisingly resourceful weapon in the hands of a seasoned user thanks to its design.
For one, the wide and curved blade forms a hook-shaped tool which can come in quite handy in a few ways. For example, the slightly shorter bottom point can be used to hook the ankle of an opponent and sweep them off their feet; hook behind the neck of the foe and then drag them to the ground; or hook the edge of a shield to pull it from the enemy’s grip.
Some Vikings have even been known to hook their Viking battle axe blade onto the short wooden walls of a fort, in order to haul themselves up and over with the handle.
Thanks to the longer point at the outer end of its blade, the Cold Steel Viking Axe can also be used to stab at opponents, and parry blows from them. And so, it is much more than just a cutting tool.
Blade Material
1055 carbon steel, which was used to construct the blade of this tactical fighting axe, is a steel material which medium carbon content enables it to better withstand shock and stress. As a result of its desirable properties, this high-strength steel is usually used to make swords, as well as other weapons and tools intended for heavy use.
Blade construction
Drop forging, the process through which the Cold Steel Viking Battle Axe blade was put, is one in which a pair of impression dies and a heavy hammer is used to form and compress heated metal bars or billets into complex shapes.
This process offers several advantages, one of which is that it produces parts that are significantly stronger than cast parts. Drop forged steel such as is used to construct the Cold Steel Viking Axe blade is remarkably tough because as the metal is compressed and shaped by the force of the hammer or press, a more uniform grain structure is achieved, and any voids or porosity in the metal are eliminated.
Handle Material
Long enough to accommodate two handed use, the Viking Axe handle is, of course, made of premium American Hickory. The second hardest hardwood species in North America, this tree’s wood is considered to be extremely durable, and able to withstand almost anything.
In fact, Hickory, ranked 1820 on the Janka hardness scale, is about 41% harder than the traditional Red Oak. The wood, used in the past for carriage wheels and spokes, is now the go-to material for making make cabinetry, furniture, flooring, tool handles including hammers and pick axes, sporting goods equipment, etc.
Applications
The Cold Steel Viking Axe is, of course, a fighting axe, and not intended for cutting wood or vegetation due to its narrower blade profile. While it’s made for use as a standalone weapon, more experienced fighters can pair it with a sword, shield or long sax.
Viking Axe Reviews
Those who have already bought and used it have quite a lot to say about the Viking battle axe. The following are some user reviews for your reading pleasure:

“Finally, an axe that’s my size! I feared that the handle would be somewhat slender, but that fear was laid to rest as soon as I pulled it out of the box. Some dislike the varnish, but I find it both attractive and practical, as it provides a very slip resistant grip. As for the axe head, it gleams beautifully in the light and has a great weight to it. I have seen others complaining that the eye is too thick and adds unneccesary weight. I, on the other hand, see the potential devastation it could cause when used as a hammer. The very broad, graceful edge is sharp…for an axe at least. I can rub my fingers up and down the edge without so much as a scratch, but it’s sharp enough to cleave through whatever is unfortunate enough to be in it’s path. The points, however, are sharp enough to punch through plate armor…I mean, sheet metal with minimal effort. Assembly was fairly easy, even though mine came without instructions somehow. Once completed, I was in awe at how mighty this axe feels in my hands. My only complaint is, like many others have found, that the screw really detracts from the overall aesthetics and I found to be redundant. The tapered haft, once hammered in firmly, held well enough on its own. I would have preferred a steel or brass pin instead, but, for the price, this is easily forgiven. I plan to hide it with a leather cross strap anyway, so I can’t complain. Overall, I am happy with my new axe and can’t wait to test its might against some proper targets.”

“Awesome bang for the buck. Handle is a great profile and blade is sharp and light Retainer set screw is a nice touch, wish it didn’t say Taiwan on it but that’s being picky, only reason it doesn’t get five stars”

“Came fast and sharp although I sharpened it a bit myself and I wish it was longer but other than that it’s great”
