Ruger New Vaquero Description
The New Vaquero was introduced in 2005 for the 21st century cowboy action shooter, and comes with several improvements which address the complaints traditionalists had regarding the original Vaquero which debuted much earlier in 1993.
Ruger modeled this single-action cowboy revolver after the 1873 Colt; thus, the Ruger Vaquero blends the weight, balance, classic lines, inherent strengths, and most of the features found on the then US military service revolver with modern steel and manufacturing techniques, making it one of the most rugged and safest sidearms available.
The main frame, grip frame, barrel, cylinder, and ejector rod housing of the Stainless model of the Ruger New Vaquero, which is our focus in this write-up, are all made of corrosion resistant stainless steel with a high gloss finish; and the robust all-steel frame is designed to withstand modern magnum cartridges.
Similar to the pre-1962 Ruger Blackhawk® XR-3 grip, the traditional western-style, hand-filling grip of this western six shooter is widely acknowledged to be one of the most comfortable and natural-pointing grips ever designed, and it enables users of the Ruger Vaquero to draw, take aim, and shoot instinctively.
Cold hammer-forged, the barrel boasts ultra-precise rifling which enhances not just accuracy, but also longevity; the cylinder has a traditional beveled design which simplifies or speeds up holstering; and the large, crescent-shaped ejector rod head is practical in use as well as traditional in form, making it perfect for all cowboys and cowgirls.
The patented reverse-indexing pawl, which is a new part added to the Ruger New Vaquero by the manufacturer, facilitates loading and unloading by allowing the shooter to backup when turning the cylinder.
Also featured on this cowboy revolver are a transfer bar mechanism and loading gate interlock, both of which provide an unmatched level of security against accidental discharge, making it possible for the shooter to carry the firearm safely with all six chambers loaded.
The Ruger Vaquero front sight, thanks to its low profile design, does not interfere with holstering or unholstering; and because it is solidly fixed to the barrel, it is never in danger of being knocked out of alignment. Same goes for the rear sight notch which is milled into the solid topstrap.
Overall, this Ruger Vaquero 45 LC is a dependable, low maintenance single-action revolver that is simple and safe to handle and fire, a reliable companion to have along in the backcountry or in marine environments.

Ruger Vaquero Additional Information
Brief History
The first Vaquero was introduced in 1993 as a variant of Ruger’s New Model Blackhawk. Unlike the Blackhawk, it came with fixed service sights and a simulated case-hardened main frame on its carbon steel variations; its mid-size steel frame and cylinder are scaled-down to the same size as the original 1955 Ruger Blackhawk, resulting to a close resemblance to the classic single-action revolvers of the late 1800’s.
The Ruger Vaquero with its traditional Colt-like profile effectively combines the original Old West single-action look and feel with new features, which made it quickly gain popularity, especially among fans of the cowboy action shooting (CAS) sport.
In fact, since its debut, this firearm has dominated the CAS world and earned its reputation for rugged reliability, which is not surprising given its strength and mechanical superiority. Due to its widespread popularity among single-action shooters and cowboy action competitors, the Vaquero cowboy revolver is often referred to as “the gun that won the New West”.
First-Issue Vaquero vs. New Vaquero
So in what way(s) is the first-style Vaquero different from the new model which Ruger unveiled in 2005?
The major difference is in size. The Ruger New Vaquero is slimmer than the original as it returns to the smaller “XR-3” grip frame of the 1950s-era Blackhawks. In addition, the main frame is smaller, and the size of the cylinder is significantly reduced as well.
In summary, here are the ways in which the 2005 Vaquero was revamped to make it different from – and better than – the original 1993 model Ruger Vaquero:
- The frame and cylinder diameter were scaled down to the dimensions of the original 1955 Blackhawk, making it almost the same as a Colt
- The grip frame was also scaled down to the original pre-XR-3 frame dimensions and black-checkered, hard-rubber-like grips were offered
- The cylinder bevel was increased to speed up re-holstering and reduce holster wear
- The ejector rod head was changed to a traditional crescent shape
- The unsightly barrel roll-stamp warning was hidden under the barrel
Loading Procedure
This Ruger Vaquero 45 LC lends itself to a simple loading procedure:
- Open the loading gate on the right recoil shield so that the cylinder can turn freely
- Insert a cartridge into the visible chamber
- Rotate the cylinder clockwise until you hear a click
- Insert another round and repeat until all the chambers are loaded
On almost all traditional single-action revolvers, drawing back the hammer to the loading notch to enable the cylinder turn for loading/unloading is a requirement; the Ruger Vaquero western six shooter, in contrast, was designed with a free-spin feature which is activated when the loading gate is opened, and this eases loading.
The audible click that results when the cylinder is rotated clockwise is an indication that it is precisely aligned with the loading-gate cutout in the frame, as well as with the traditional spring-loaded ejector rod in its housing on the right underside of the barrel.
This Ruger New Vaquero free-spin innovation can also be regarded as a safety feature because while trying to load revolvers – such as the Colt SAA – without it, shooters can lose their thumb-hold on the hammer.
Hammer Design
The hammer featured on this cowboy revolver has a new shape that gives it a slightly longer spur and a somewhat different down curve to the top edge. As a result, the Ruger Vaquero looks a little more original, and the shooter is provided with more leverage.
To ensure that cocking is smooth and easy, the hammer spring has been redesigned as well.
Recommended Ammunition
These two brands of handgun ammuntion above are tested and trusted, and will work quite well with your Ruger New Vaquero.
Applications
This single-action western six shooter is, of course, an ideal sidearm for competitors in Cowboy Action Shooting events, but that isn’t all it’s good for. It can also be used for target shooting as well as for aesthetic purposes, and many shooters like to carry the Ruger Vaquero while engaged in any activity in the rugged outdoors.

Here are some reviews of the firearm for your reading pleasure.

“Let’s face it, most of us aren’t cowboy action shooters, but this pistol is FUN to shoot! It’s a range toy for sure, but the quality, fit and finish is awesome. I did end up changing a few springs, still shoots reliably, pretty accurate for what it is. It’s a keeper!”
![](https://armsintel.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/05/rnv-rev2.png)
“This gun is a close resemblance of the Colt SAA revolver of the old west and many western movies. It has similar weight, just a few ounces heavier. Except, as a newer gun, its safe, reliable, more rugged and durable.
I got this gun to learn how to spin cowboy revolvers. Unlike its real west counterparts, it has aa wide trigger which makes it easier to spin.”

“Very solid weapon. Hardly any recoil. Ejecting spent cartridges is a little cumbersome. May just take some practice, which I will happily do. I got pearl grips to replace stock ones. They look awesome.”

“I love my new cowboy gun. I have a couple import single actions, and they really just don’t compare.”

2nd favorite to Ed Brown 1911 45ACP”

“There is not a handgun on the market more fun to shoot than this one….try a .357 using .38 light loads. I have had mine for several years and have really enjoyed it. Top quality and unbelievably accurate.”

“One of the best products for single action shooting to hit the market. Solid, smooth, and reliable. Ruger’s rep for great products continues. Taken care of, this revolver will more than likely out live you and your next generation. I have several of the different barrel lengths, and calibers, and have never been let down. Factory ammo, hand loads, and so on run right through it. There are so many different accessories, parts, and gunsmiths who specialize in this weapon, I don’t think Ruger will ever discontinue it.”
