Gerber Bushcraft Axe Description
To thrive in the wild, you need not just awareness of your environment, but also tools you can depend upon. Gerber offers such tools, and our focus today is on the Bushcraft Axe which excels at two primary survival tasks: Starting a fire and building shelter.
This camp axe comes equipped with a blade which cutting edge is almost 7 inches wide. Made of carbon steel and coated with black oxide, the blade – which, by the way, does not come sharp – features a built-in, machined relief for deeper cuts with less effort.
Opposite the blade sits a hammer head that provides an excellent striking surface on the Gerber Bushcraft Axe, and this incredibly robust hammer head can deliver powerful blows while the steel remains completely intact.
The forged, single-piece axe head incorporates an innovative overstrike guard that adds protection for when the user misses their target, and this ensures durability. When, for example, you need to drive stakes into the ground, the side of the Gerber axe head can also be used for hammering or smacking with no damage to the composite material surrounding it.
A rubber overmold grip provides additional choke-up cutting utility, and this comfort grip is located at the bottom of the axe head, the area which features porting for weight reduction.
The black powder coated steel, weight reducing porting and rubber overmold grip all combine to give the Gerber Bushcraft Axe a very modern appearance. The ergonomic design of the tool also not only reduces weight, but as well improves grip for long haul use.
At 26 inches, its handle, which fits snugly in the hand, is long enough such that this hammer axe can be comfortably wielded with both hands. The shape of the handle also makes it possible to deliver more powerful blows with either the blade or the hammer because the curvature somehow puts more weight behind your swing as you use the Bushcraft Axe.
Almost entirely composed of solid steel, the handle is designed to be hollow such that useful space is created within it. Nestled within this space is a waterproof gear storage stick with two compartments within which you’ll find the included 9-inch paracord, and can store a mini-size lighter, dry tinder or other material for starting a fire. You can withdraw this stick by pressing the button release near the tip of the handle.
On the whole, the sturdy Gerber Bushcraft Axe feels great in the hand, and can get the job done in style, whether at a camp site or in your backyard.

Gerber Axe Additional Information
Blade & Handle Material
Carbon steel, which is the primary material the manufacturer chose to make the Gerber Bushcraft Axe with, has several properties which makes it desirable for many applications. These attributes include:
- Extreme strength
- Higher shock resistance
- High and low temperature resistance
- Corrosion resistance
- Wear resistance
- Ease of cleaning and maintenance
These properties tend to be even more pronounced when the amount of carbon in the steel is higher than usual, as is the case with this axe for bushcraft.
Axe Head Finish
The black oxide applied to the axe head, including the blade and hammer, is a coating used to increase the corrosion and wear resistance of steel parts. It also provides a matte finish that is aesthetically pleasing.
Blade Relief
The noticeable relief behind the cutting edge of the Gerber Bushcraft Axe head serves to decrease the amount of steel-on-wood friction that usually occurs when a log is being split. As a result, the axe tends not to get stuck as often as happens in the case of a traditional convex axe head.
Carry
For safe carry and convenient storage, Gerber offers this camp axe with a sheath made of a simple cordura type material. A durable velcro strap that wraps around the head and secures it, as well as a loop on the top for hanging the tool, are features of this well-built, black Bushcraft Axe sheath.
Warranty
As a way of upholding their commitment to quality and service, the manufacturer of this tool confidently offers a limited lifetime warranty on all their products.

“After waiting and waiting for spring. My new Bushcraft axe final came. Right out of the box the axe just feels good and to be honest. I didn’t even realize it came with the storage stick so now I’m really pumped to add this product to all my other Gerber Gear collection!!

“Purchased from the store. All their stock was in a locked drawer, loose where all have scuff marks. No biggie as I’m sure if you are buying this…it’s gonna get more than scuff marks anyway. Every finishing touch on this axe is excellent. However, the blade has so much finish on it that the edge on it is dull. As this is a bushcraft axe, the edge is so dull that making a feather stick would be impossible. You would more likely to break your stick than get a feathering effect from it. Feels great in the hands with both gloves and no gloves. I bought this for the weight and I was not disappointed. Most 5lb axes are mauls. This has a very nice axe profile without the maul design.

Gerber Camp Axe Variants
This Gerber axe isn’t offered only in coyote brown; there’s also a grey variant (31-003773) available, as shown below:

Gerber Bushcraft Hatchet
Similar to it in all aspects except for length, the 15-inch-long Bushcraft Hatchet is designed to go hand-in-hand with the Bushcraft Axe.
While an axe with its long handle which allows for two-handed use is designed for chopping down trees, splitting firewood, etc., a hatchet, which is essentially a short-handled, one-handed version of an axe, is more geared towards trimming off branches, splitting kindling or tinder, and even cutting meat in the wild.
Just like the Gerber Bushcraft Axe, the Gerber Bushcraft Hatchet comes with a sheath, and is also offered in coyote brown and grey, as shown below:

You may also be interested in another type of axe similar to the hatchet in terms of size – the tomahawk. Optimized as a weapon, this fighting tool usually comes with more sharp points, and sometimes a spike behind the main blade.
Gerber offers such an axe for combat as well, and it even comes with a breaching feature included; check out the Downrange Tomahawk.
