Colt Anaconda Description
New for 2021, the updated Anaconda revolver is Colt’s newest addition to their popular Snake Gun revolver series, and has been fully re-designed to utilize an oversized version of the 2020 Colt Python action/frame.
The “bulked-up”, solid stainless steel frame means that the 44 Magnum revolver is even stronger and more durable than its original version which debuted in 1990. Its topstrap is also drilled and tapped for easy installment of an optic mount – such as Colt’s optional Picatinny rail – on the Anaconda Colt, and this is one feature out of many which all handgunners – especially huntsmen – who prefer shooting with scopes or other optics such as red dot sights, do appreciate.
Unlike its original version which was offered with checker-molded Pachmayr grips complete with a Colt medallion on both sides, this new Colt Anaconda sports recoil-absorbing Hogue grips. The soft-rubber Monogrip features a palmswell, deep finger grooves, an exposed backstrap, and a not-very-distinct Colt logo on the right grip panel.
Made of forged stainless steel just like the frame and 6-round cylinder, the 6-inch barrel featured on our focus Anaconda gun comes with its muzzle crown recessed to ensure that the rifling is protected. It also sports a full-length underlug, and a ventilated rib which adds to the attractive looks of the 44mag revolver.
The sights consist of an interchangeable, ramped front sight with a highly visible orange insert, paired with a target-quality rear sight that is adjustable for windage and elevation; and fast target engagement with the Colt Anaconda is the norm, thanks to these factory-installed sights.
Wearing an attractive polished finish like all the other stainless parts of the firearm, the cylinder is about 2 inches longer than is the case on comparable revolvers (like the Smith & Wesson Model 29) to accommodate extra-long or heavy rounds; its diameter is also slightly larger, however it still accepts the same HKS speedloaders used by the Smith & Wesson N-frame revolvers.
The Anaconda Colt 44 Magnum revolver also features the manufacturer’s iconic cylinder latch release which smoothly opens the revolver for loading and unloading; an ejector with a knurled end for extra purchase while ejecting spent cases; an ejector-rod shroud that protects the ejector rod from being bent out of line during normal use; a trigger that offers a non-stacking, smooth-as-glass pull thanks to the linear leaf-spring action; a transfer bar safety mechanism which stops the Colt Anaconda from firing until the trigger is actually pulled; and an exposed hammer with a wide spur and horizontal serrations or grooves for a surer purchase.

Anaconda Gun Additional Information
Design and Construction
This new Anaconda Colt handgun took a design path which, in several aspects, is quite different from its original version which was Colt’s first attempt to compete with large revolvers offered by Ruger and Smith & Wesson.
As mentioned earlier, the frame is essentially that of the 2020 Python beefed up for additional strength. The ventilated barrel rib is a feature that can be traced to the original Python revolvers.
The 44mag revolver, which essentially was built using the knowledge Colt gained from the new Python, also incorporates forged and computer-machined components instead of cast parts.
Trigger & Leaf-Spring Action
The Colt Anaconda trigger with an average double-action pull weight of 9.5 pounds is quite smooth and easily manageable; in other words, it’s precisely of the quality you’d expect from a Colt.
Instead of a coil spring which many are more familiar with, what the manufacturer refers to as the “Linear Leaf spring, version 2” (LL2) is featured on this 2021 version of the Magnum 44 Anaconda. This action, which is an updated version of that present on the recently introduced King Cobra and Python, offers a smoother, more consistent trigger pull and no stacking, thanks to its shape.
Grips
Secured by a screw at the bottom of the grip frame, the Hogue rubber grip panels on this 44 Magnum revolver are somewhat narrow, with pronounced and longer finger grooves. Featuring a stippled – rather than checkered – surface, these Colt Anaconda grips do not enclose the backstrap, which means that the distance from the back of the firearm to the trigger is reduced to accommodate shooters with smaller hands.
The grip frame is, of course, the same as the Python’s; this means that the grip panels are interchangeable with those made for the Colt Python, and any set of grips made for the Python will also fit on the Anaconda Colt handgun which, by the way, isn’t offered with a second set of wood stocks.
The black, soft rubber grips, which can be slid onto the firearm from the base of the grip frame, overall fits most hands very well, and the full purchase it offers makes it easier to control the somewhat bulky Anaconda gun.
Front and Rear Sights
The orange insert of the ramped front sight helps to provide contrast, and is aligned within the adjustable notch of the rear sight. Should there be any need to change it, the front sight can be removed by unscrewing a single lock screw at the muzzle using a small Allen wrench.
The target-quality Colt Anaconda rear sight features a black notch that’s precisely adjustable for windage and elevation. The rear-sight blade is dovetail-mounted into the sight base; windage settings are locked in place by a setscrew, while elevation adjustments are controlled by one vertical screw installed just in front of the blade.
Secured to the topstrap with a single screw, the Magnum 44 Anaconda rear sight can also be easily removed, together with the tapped and threaded screws that are just ahead of it on the topstrap, in order to install Colt’s optional Picatinny rail, or other compatible optic-mounting rail.
Recoil Management
Thanks to its substantial weight, this 44mag revolver is quite controllable with standard .44 Magnum loads. The long cylinder, full-length underlug, and ventilated rib, all add weight to the Colt Anaconda at the right places, especially at the muzzle, helping to tame recoil so that the shooter can deliver faster follow-up shots.
Less felt recoil, and hence a more pleasant shooting experience, can be achieved by using .44 S&W Special and .44 S&W Russian cartridges which are not as powerful as the .44 Magnum, but which the Anaconda revolver can safely shoot nonetheless.
Applications
An “unstoppable huntsman’s sidearm” as the manufacturer describes it, this 44 Magnum revolver with its excellent trigger pull and outstanding accuracy is ideal for handgun hunters who are into medium and large game – like black bear, wild boar, deer, etc. – hunting. Its drilled and tapped frame that allows for the use of a long eye-relief scope for example makes the Colt Anaconda even more suitable for hunting applications at any reasonable range.
With the appropriate ammunition, such as a .44 S&W Special round loaded with a 200-grain (or heavier) hollow point bullet, this firearm can also be used for defensive purposes.
And of course, you can have a good time at the range with the 44mag revolver.
