Henry Homesteader Description
New for 2023, the 9mm Homesteader is a remarkably versatile, semi-automatic PCC (pistol-caliber carbine) with – in the manufacturer’s words – the brawn of a workhorse and the beauty of a show pony.
A tool that can absolutely be relied upon to deliver whenever and wherever, the semi auto rifle comes with a barrel that is approximately 16-4 inches long; this Henry Homesteader barrel is made of carbon steel, wears a blued finish, and features ½–28 muzzle threads (which is the standard for 9mm barrels), meaning it – right out of the box – will accept muzzle devices made for 9mm pistols.
With some loads, the carbine-length barrel increases the velocity of the 9mm projectile significantly beyond typical handgun velocities.
The hard anodized black aluminum receiver is drilled and tapped for a Weaver 63B base; in other words, the Henry Homesteader 9mm comes with its topstrap ready to accept the same scope mount which Henry employs on its lever-action rifles, so the user, if they prefer, can mount illuminated or magnified optics.
The stock, grip and forend of this 9mm semi auto rifle are all made of sealed American walnut, which is an ideal hardwood for the construction of firearm furniture. The buttstock wears a soft rubber recoil pad that feels solid against the shoulder and enhances shooting comfort; the Henry Homesteader forend has a unique square shape and, like the grip, is textured for a no-slip purchase; while both the stock and forend each feature a sling swivel mounted on their toe and tip respectively.
Tall enough to be used while a suppressor is installed, the iron sights that come attached to the barrel of the Henry 9mm Homesteader consist of a screw-on front post sight near the muzzle, and an adjustable ghost ring rear sight near the receiver. These enable quick and intuitive target acquisition; and, compared to a handgun, the semi auto carbine provides a longer sight radius that significantly enhances accuracy at distances of, say, 25 to 50 yards.
The controls on the Homesteader rifle are thoughtful as well as accessible. They include a bolt charging handle that can be mounted quickly and securely on either side of the bolt; a bolt-hold-open lever that can be pressed from the right or left side of the firearm; a tang-mounted, two-position thumb safety switch; and a centrally located, bottom-mounted magazine release toggle/button.
While it’s not attached to the weapon for shipping, the Henry Homesteader charging handle can easily be attached to either side of the action; the safety switch helps to prevent accidental discharges; the mag-release button located forward of the magazine allows for quick index-finger activation and reliably ejects empty mags from the magwell; and the single-stage, 5.6 lb. trigger offers a crisp break and a very perceptible reset.
Incredibly durable thanks to its high-quality components and finishes, the Homesteader 9mm carbine comes standard with two Henry magazines (one 5-round and the other 10-round); both of these mags load quickly with zero slop, and seat cleanly with a click that is satisfyingly audible.

9mm Homesteader Additional Information
Balance and Recoil
The Henry Homesteader was built from the ground up to be an excellent offhand PCC. Its large and heavy bolt is connected by two action bars to a large steel weight that sits within the handguard; as a result, the reciprocating mass in the semi auto carbine is heavier than that in any AR, properly distributed along the weapon’s length, and well-balanced.
The width and flat nature of the Henry 9mm Homesteader forestock also enhances in-hand feel and overall balance. Overall, the rifle’s length-to-weight ratio is ideal, which is why it carries so well.
With most of the additional mass or reciprocating weight forward in the forearm, cycling is slowed down, the firearm doesn’t move about when fired, and felt recoil is significantly reduced.
It’s worth mentioning that by default, carbines chambered in 9mm like the Henry Homesteader minimize not just recoil, but also muzzle blast; this is because there’s not much pressure left behind a 9mm projectile by the time it has travelled down 16 inches of the carbine’s barrel.
So with this semi auto rifle, it’s easy to get back on target faster from shot to shot, and this makes for a pleasant shooting experience for seasoned shooters as well as newbie users of the Homesteader rifle.
The unique leather-like texturing on the genuine American walnut furniture, and the soft rubber recoil pad, all provide non-slip contact points that give the shooter even greater control over the weapon.
Sight Acquisition
As mentioned earlier, the factory-installed iron sights are tall enough not to be obscured by any device, such as a suppressor, attached to the muzzle of the Henry Homesteader; as such, no raised or additional sights are required to shoot the semi auto carbine suppressed. However, a scope base when attached will obstruct the rear ghost ring sight, and a red dot or other optic will also block, and therefore render both of the sights unusable.
Bear in mind that when a red dot is mounted on a Picatinny rail attached to the Henry Homesteader 9mm, the shooter will have to pull their head away from the stock’s comb to obtain a good sight picture. But this isn’t a problem as the firearm is chambered for a handgun cartridge, and therefore doesn’t generate enough recoil to distort one’s sight picture, even with a soft cheek weld.
The narrow grip of the stock’s throat, together with the raised profile of the Henry 9mm Homesteader receiver, promotes a solid cheek weld as well as great sight acquisition.
Note that instructions for windage and elevation adjustment of the rear aperture sight can be found in the rifle’s instruction manual.
Bolt Function
The semi-automatic blowback action of the Henry Homesteader is quite simple in the sense that it solely depends on the expanding gases of the cartridge to cycle the bolt and eject spent cases, and this reduces the chances of a failure.
When a magazine is not inserted into the 9mm semi auto rifle, the bolt slides quickly and smoothly, and the dual bolt latch locks it open. Once a magazine is inserted into the Homesteader 9mm carbine, a light pull rearward unlocks the charging handle, causing the bolt to spring forward, grab a round, and send it into the chamber cleanly.
Thanks to the last-round-bolt-hold-open feature, the bolt automatically locks back when the magazine runs dry, providing a tactile as well as visual indication that the firearm needs to be reloaded.
This LFBHO function of the Henry Homesteader is also a safety feature as it tells you, at a glance, that the chamber is empty and thus the firearm can be handled with no fear whatsoever of an accidental discharge.
Switching the Charging Handle
To change the charging handle from right to left operation or vice versa, you only have to lock the bolt to the rear, pull the handle from the Homesteader riflebolt, and then reattach it to the other side of the bolt. Absolutely no tools are required for this simple operation.
Changing Magazine Adapters
While it comes from the factory setup by default to accept Henry magazines, two of which, of course, are shipped with the firearm, our focus model (H027-H9) of the 9mm Homesteader can accept Glock G17/G19 as well as Smith and Wesson M&P9 magazines as long as the corresponding magazine adapter has been swapped in.
To swap magazine well inserts, drive the three cross pins out of the receiver from either side; this allows the buttstock and trigger assembly to be detached from the Henry Homesteader receiver, and with both of these removed, the tab of the mag-well insert will pop out of the receiver, making it possible for you to slide it out and replace it with another.
The whole process usually takes less than 10 minutes and is uncomplicated, as you can see.
9mm PCC Advantage
A short and relatively light carbine – like the Homesteader rifle– chambered in 9mm offers a few advantages, one of which has to do with cost. Because it is produced in massive quantities, 9mm Luger is the most affordable centerfire caliber and as a result, a 9mm PCC is far cheaper to shoot than anything other than a rimfire.
Such a firearm also lends itself to more diverse applications than, say, a rimfire.
Applications
The fun-to-shoot Henry Homesteader semi auto rifle is an ideal firearm for more uses than casual plinking at the range.
Under 36 inches in length and weighing just 6.6 pounds, it is compact and highly maneuverable in close quarters; it is also chambered for 9mm cartridges which are widely used for defensive purposes. As a result, the Henry Homesteader 9mm is an effective choice for home defense.
Beyond the range and outside the home, this semi auto carbine is great for varmint control and livestock protection at the ranch.
It can also serve as a truck gun, or a gun to sling across your back while exploring the deep woods.
Recommended Ammunition
As the Henry Homesteader is chambered in America’s most popular caliber, you have lots of options when it comes to which loads to use. These options range from cheap bulk training and plinking ammo to top-shelf, defense rounds that are technologically advanced.
Consider the following ammunition, which cover a range of applications, for use with your new Henry 9mm Homesteader:
