Mossberg 590 Shockwave Description
Small in size, yet big in terms of performance, the fun-to-shoot, easy-to-clean 590 Shockwave in .410 gauge brings the legendary Mossberg pump-action reliability to a 26.4-inch package with less recoil than larger bore Shockwave models.
This compact pump shotgun comes with all the standard features that have made similar Mossberg firearms the choice for millions worldwide, such as an ambidextrous safety, dual extractors, positive steel-to-steel lockup, twin action bars, and a smooth operating anti-jam elevator.
The Mossberg 590 Shockwave safety is top or tang-mounted as it is on all other Mossberg pump-actions, making it easy for shooters, whether right or left handed, to locate and operate it under stressful conditions without having to move their hands from the firing position; while the last four features mentioned above ensure trouble-free operation.
Capable of chambering or cycling 3″ or 2.5″ shotshells, this 5+1 capacity Shockwave shotgun in .410 bore is equipped with a 14.375-inch heavy-walled, cylinder bore barrel sporting a matte blued finish and a single bead sight on top; due to this barrel length, it – like all 14-inch models of the pump action shotgun – does not require Federal Class III paperwork for transfers.
Because it lends itself to reliable and simple operation, the tried and true operating system of the Mossberg 590 Shockwave will not just feed, but will also eject all types of loads reliably, even under demanding conditions.
A corn cob forend of polymer construction makes it easy to hold the firearm steady, and keeps the shooter’s lead or support hand safely clear of the barrel while firing; this tactical handguard comes with a strap attached, which enables better control when cycling the Shockwave 410 gauge action.
Among the most notable features of this firearm which is unarguably one of the best pump shotguns on the market, is the Raptor® bird’s head-style pistol grip. Also made of very resistant polymer with an improved textured finish, this Shockwave signature grip with its unique “bird head” shape not only provides a firm grip, but also allows maximum control, and even minimizes felt recoil.

Shockwave 410 Ga Additional Information
About the 590 Product Line
An evolution of the 500 series that appeared in the 1960s, the Mossberg 590 was first introduced in the 1980s, and later was adopted for combat operations by the US Army. Its standard capacity is 7-shot and, tested for decades by special police forces as well as armies around the world, it has been proven to be one of the most resistant, reliable and ultimately best pump shotguns available.
The ruggedly-built 590 lineup, which of course includes the Mossberg 590 Shockwave, offers a variety of capacities, finishes and configurations to fit individual needs, including a range of customized stock and sight features.
Mossberg 590 Mil-Spec Designation
The Mossberg 590 shotguns like the 590A1 series meet the requirements of US Military Specification 3443E, meaning they have passed tests involving drops, falls, and over 3,000 rounds of full-powered buckshot.
Essentially, the 590 is a model 500 modified in three key areas based on the government’s mil-spec: First, it features a metal, rather than a plastic, tang safety. Second, it replaced the plastic trigger guard with a metal one. Third, it replaced the magazine cap with one that allows for cleaning without the user having to disassemble it first. Mossberg calls this Shockwave shotgun magazine cap a “clean-out cap.”
Barrel Type
As opposed to the standard, lighter barrel which some variants of the 590 series feature, the heavy-walled barrel of the Mossberg 590 Shockwave, though it adds a little bit of extra weight to the pump shotgun, is ideal for extended shooting and heavy use; this is because the extra steel helps keep the barrel cooler.
Beyond being less susceptible to overheating (and subsequent warping) as they take longer to heat up, heavy-wall barrels tend to vibrate less violently as rounds pass through them than thinner steel barrels, and this may result to minor gains in accuracy.
Ball/Bead Sight
The 590 Shockwave front bead sight is a simple round bead mounted onto the top of the barrel near the muzzle. The primary advantages of this type of sight are that it
- is effective in most lighting conditions;
- doesn’t fade out or tarnish unlike some other type of sights;
- is more durable; and
- doesn’t need batteries to operate.
Overall, a gold or brass bead sight such as is present on the Mossberg 590 Shockwave is quite effective at aiding quick sight/target acquisition.
Those who, for example, hunt in the woods, and are dedicated to killing gobblers at 30 yards or in, will find that the best aiming mechanism they could have on their shotgun is a simple, plain bead.
410 Bore Advantages
The .410 gauge chambering of our focus Mossberg Shockwave 590 makes it attractive to many shooters because, while it provides sufficient stopping power, it produces lesser recoil. Thanks to this reduced recoil, smaller or inexperienced users can still maintain accuracy even in the most stressful of situations.
Pump Action Shotgun Advantages
Pump shotguns are a favorite in military, law enforcement and other circles because they are fast and reliable. Because their action is cycled manually, the reloading process is simplified, and the chances of a malfunction are minimized.
In the hands of an experienced shooter, the Mossberg 590 Shockwave pump shotgun can be almost as fast as a semi-auto; the act of sliding the forend helps you return to a target and also stabilize the weapon faster.
Applications
A compact and versatile firearm designed to be fired from the hip or as a pistol due to the lack of a buttstock, the Shockwave shotgun is more like a specific-use tool most suitable for those that already have some experience with shotguns.
Meant to provide an overwhelming amount of bang in a very small/concealable package, the 14-inch barreled pump is not really designed for use as a primary weapon, but as a backup one. Its short barrel length and ease of handling makes it ideal for use in confined spaces or tight areas where an 18-inch firearm would be cumbersome to maneuver.
The Mossberg 590 Shockwave is easy to control from different shooting positions for a wide variety of users, provided they take the time to learn to use the pump action shotgun properly.
Consequently, the firearm – especially in .410 bore – can be a great option for home defense or personal defense; it’s also suitable for law enforcement use, for fun at the range, or just as a truck gun.
This Shockwave 410 gauge can, in some cases, also be used for hunting birds such as turkey with the appropriate turkey load, even though its Cylinder Bore choke isn’t very suitable for bird shot hunting. The Henry Axe 410, a similar firearm in some respects, will be better for this and a few other applications as it features a Full choke which is removable/interchangeable with, say, an Extra Full Turkey choke.
Thanks to its compact and portable build, the shotgun isn’t just great for CQC (close quarters combat), but also lends itself to discreet storage and transportation.

“I’m a lefty that was forced to be right handed, so I’m left eye dominant and right handed. I have a youth model 20 and 410 guage youth model full size shotguns. I cannot aim efficiently, and must shoot from the hip. Im a small stature female with lost muscle mass due to medication side affects. This 410 shockwave is perfect for home defense for me. My youngest adult daughter liked it so much that I bought her one for Christmas for home defense, and living in an apartment, the 410 is perfect for her needs. Now my husband, which has the Remington 20 guage equivalence of the shockwave, wants the mossberg 20 guage shockwave. Love my No malfunctions ever, and it’s perfect for shooting without aiming. Love it and have no regrets buying it.”

“Bought my shockwave last summer of 2019 and enjoyed shooting it. I used a federal shorty shotshells and i can put 10 rounds on it. Just dont forget to buy OPSol Insert so that the small rounds will feed properly. Also a very nice home defense firearm.”

“Fun gun 410 is comfortable to shoot but man the shells are EXPENSIVE and hard to find”
![](https://armsintel.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/05/m5s-rev5.png)
“These are a great option for self defense and you don’t need an AOW Tax Stamp. The addition of the strap on the fore end keeps your hand on the grip and away from the muzzle. It also aids in quick follow up shots as you can push and pull quicker with the strap. The location of the ambidextrous tang safety is ideal form both left and right handed shooters.”
