Mossberg 940 Pro Tactical Description
The 940 Pro Tactical shotgun from Mossberg is the latest in their new line of autoloading shotguns. New for March 2022, it shares most of the same attributes as other next-generation 940 Pro shotguns offered by the manufacturer, but is specifically designed for tactical applications.
Feature-rich, reliable, and ready-to-go straight out of the box, this optic-ready Mossberg 940 Tactical Pro comes with a drilled and tapped receiver; in other words, the receiver has cuts that accept low-profile direct mounting of Holosun K or Shield RMSc-pattern micro dot sights for optimal eye alignment and improved target acquisition (a cover plate is included for when an optic is not in use).
A red fiber-optic front sight comes standard, and this can be used as a reference point for target acquisition.
The 18.5-inch barrel on this gas-operated, semi-auto 12-gauge shotgun that is the Mossberg 940 Pro Tactical is capable of accepting both 2¾- and 3-inch shells, making for a total capacity of 7+1 or 6+1 respectively.
While it comes with a removable cylinder choke tube factory-installed, this firearm is threaded for use with Accu-Choke tubes, and the muzzle features an expanded section to accommodate the threads.
A barrel clamp of polymer construction securely holds both tubes on the 940 Pro Tactical in place and allows for easy accessory customization by offering a single M-LOK slot on both sides for accessories. The clamp also boasts a traditional sling swivel mounted on the left side, and this can be reversed to accommodate left-handed users.
Injection molded from glass-filled nylon like its forend, the user-adjustable Mossberg 940 Pro Tactical stock allows for 1.75 inches of LOP flexibility, and is also adjustable for drop at comb/cast using incremental stock shims. The grip and streamlined forend both feature Mossberg’s signature texturing which is reasonably aggressive, and which checkering ensures a secure grip with sweaty or wet hands.
As a firearm optimized for defensive roles, the 940 Pro Tactical also features oversized controls which are easy to access and manipulate. The knurled charging handle boasts a large diameter; the contoured bolt release is lengthened; and the serrated safety button is elongated. The loading port is also enlarged and beveled to accommodate quad loading techniques.
The shell lifter is flat, solid and easy on the thumb; the Mossberg 940 Tactical Pro trigger with a slightly creepy rollover break trips the sear consistently at 5 pounds, with approximately 3/16 inches of travel before reset; and, with the top tang safety easily accessible to both right and left-handed users, this firearm indeed lives up to expectations as a fighting shotgun.
Also featured is a well-designed and durable gas system that allows for up to 1500 rounds between cleanings, and key components of the Mossberg 940 Pro Tactical gas and fire control system – internal parts like gas piston, magazine tube, hammer and sear – wear the corrosion-resistant nickel boron coating which reduces friction for a long service life, and makes cleanup easier as well.
All in all, this is a great tactical shotgun for anyone in search of a quality shooting experience.
Also read the “…Additional Information” section further below for even more insight into the features, components, and other aspects of the Mossberg Pro Tactical.
Mossberg also offers another great tactical shotgun – the 500 ATI Tactical. Unlike the 940 which is a semi-auto, this one is a pump action; and the manufacturer teamed up with American Tactical Imports to outfit it with a set of coordinated components.
Worth checking out as well is this other (quite unique) tactical shotgun equally designed for close-quarters combat applications like home defense, and which also comes with an 18.5-inch cylinder bore barrel.

940 Pro Tactical Additional Information
Stock & LOP
The Mossberg 940 Pro Tactical stock can, at its shortest length of pull, accommodate very small-statured shooters or those wearing plate carriers. Adding every one of the included spacers, as well as the second, longer buttpad, results to an increase in LOP by an additional 2.5 inches.
Thanks also to the shims at the rear of the receiver which can be used to adjust rise and cast, the Mossberg 940 Tactical Pro can more easily be adapted to any physique.
Gas System
This firearm’s gas system is able to handle anything from 1-ounce birdshot to 3-inch magnum slugs by virtue of a relief valve in the gas cylinder, NiB coated components, and lots of room for the dissipation of waste gases.
The redesigned piston vents excess gas out the front, and works together with the spring-loaded valve in the Mossberg 940 Pro Tactical gas block to trap just enough propellant to cycle the action.
Any gas that makes its way under the forend meets a pusher tube that connects the piston to the twin operating rods, and this lightweight aluminum component features holes, vents, ridges, and ribs that reduce friction while giving carbon and plastic an alternative exit route besides the outside of the magazine tube.
Safety
The advantage of a tang-mounted safety such as is featured on this 940 Pro Tactical shotgun is that it allows shooters to quickly click the gun off safe regardless of the circumstance. If you need to shoot with your off hand in a tight spot, you’ll also find that a tang safety is more convenient as you won’t have to reach across the trigger guard from a left-handed shooting position.
Recoil Management
As it is a non-inertia shotgun, the Mossberg 940 Pro Tactical generates recoil that is very manageable. The gas system takes much of the sting out of even heavier loads; and the recoil pad, which is somewhat beefy at 7/8 of an inch, is quite effective at dampening recoil.
Recommended Ammunition
Thanks to its efficient gas system, either 2¾-inch or 3-inch ammo can be cycled with zero issues using the 940 Pro Tactical; however, many shooters prefer to go for mostly 2¾-inch loads as the longer 3-inch shells decrease magazine capacity and add recoil.
Some shotgun ammo to try include:
- Federal Premium Personal Defense 00 buckshot
- Federal TruBall 1-ounce slugs (2¾-inch or 3-inch)
- Remington No. 4 buck
