Remington 700 Alpha 1 Description
A completely different gun from the regular Remington 700, the new Remington Alpha 1 is the next evolution of the 700 series of rifles from Remington Firearms, and showcases modern key features that are second to none.
With several components now upgraded or redesigned, this Remington bolt action rifle comes with a new action, a new bolt, a new barrel, a longer magazine, a receiver with a longer magwell for larger bullets, an ejection port that has been opened up or lengthened for better extraction, etc.
With these optimized features and more, the Model 700 Alpha 1 qualifies as one of the best hunting rifles on the market.
Now constructed using a better steel material, the fluted barrel now has what is called a “5R rifling”; it also features the popular 11-degree “target” crown, and its muzzle is 5/8 x 24 threaded for easy attachment of various muzzle devices.
The Remington 700 Alpha 1 bolt has a one-piece spiral fluted body with a bolt handle that is changeable, and the bolt stop has been changed from a sheet-metal stamping on the side of the trigger to a more conventional – and stronger – toggle by the side of the fully round receiver.
More features of the Rem 700 308 Hunter rifle include a recoil lug that is precision ground; a tool-less takedown firing pin assembly; an ejection port that is enlarged; an AG composite carbon fiber stock with Pachmayr recoil pad; a 3 lb. Elite Hunter Timney straight trigger; an Oberndorf style trigger guard made of aluminum; and a longer internal magazine box (for longer case lengths).
The Remington Model 700 Alpha 1 also comes standard with a Picatinny rail mounted with 8-40 screws instead of the traditional 6-48, and present as well are an array of other custom features that will maximize the performance of present-day ammunition.

Remington 700 Alpha 1 Additional Information
Barrel
The barrel of this firearm has undergone a redesign from front to back. It has been fluted to save weight and, instead of the traditional 4- or 6-groove rifling which places lands and grooves opposite each other, the Rem 700 308 rifle features a 5-groove rifling which results in less bullet deformation. 5R barrels are also preferred for the improved performance they provide.
The threaded muzzle features a cap to protect its threads when nothing is attached to it, and the thread protector extends slightly past the end of the barrel to protect it. Also upgraded are all the twist rates on the Remington Alpha 1.
The new twist rates – as marked on the side of the barrel – are now faster for heavier bullets; in other words, just as the magazine and ejection port have been made longer, rifling twists for some cartridges have been tightened to handle longer, higher-BC bullets, good examples being the 1:8 twist in certain calibers of the Remington 700 Alpha 1, .243 Winchesters, and 7mm Remington Magnums.
The throat chamber has also been changed to make way for the free bore length and size.
Barrel Switching
On this new Remington bolt action rifle, quality has been improved such that the action, bolt, and barrel are made so precisely that any Remington bolt and barrel of the correct size can now be switched – and chamber headspace will remain the same.
In other words, the barrels of all Remington Alpha 1 rifles can be exchanged with any other barrel of the same head size and still have the proper head spacing. The same applies to the barrels: Any gunsmith can swap them out by just screwing them in. The tolerances are held so tight that the rifle has basically become plug and play with parts. Compared to what is obtainable with the old Remington rifles, this is quite a drastic change.
Those who have switched barrels on other 700 rifles have found that headspace is okay about 75 to 80 percent of the time, which is impressive; but the Remington 700 Alpha 1 impresses even more in this regard as headspace is said to be okay 100 percent of the time. This makes it unnecessary for an amateur who owns a barrel vise to use the services of a professional gunsmith.
Bolt
Bear in mind that while it is very similar to that of the original 700, the Rem 700 308 bolt is constructed very differently. The new body is now one-piece – instead of being several parts soldered together – and fluted for easier travel, while the extraction cam has also been changed to make bolt opening easier.
Instead of being brazed, which occasionally resulted in it coming off, the bolt handle is now designed to screw on. The screw-on design of the Remington Alpha 1 bolt handle not only ensures attachment that is much more secure, but also makes the handle easy to change; this fits right into the modern “self-customizing” trend which the AR-15s and Ruger 10/22s epitomize.
Of course the bolt, just like the barrel, can be replaced with any other bolt of the same head size with proper head spacing still maintained.
Receiver
The Remington 700 Alpha 1 is equipped with a round receiver, as opposed to a flat-back or square receiver. This type of action and its reciprocating parts are significantly faster and cheaper to machine; and, when it comes to raw action strength, a round receiver tends to be stronger than a square one of the same weight or cross sectional area due to the fact that the corners of a square cross section carry very little of the axial load.
Stock Material
Carbon fiber, the material which the Rem 700 308 rifle stock is made of, is extremely durable, paintable, and significantly more rigid than, say, the plastic stocks shipped with many rifles today.
Unlike wood stocks, carbon fiber – and fiberglass – stocks are non-porous, and so will not react to temperature and humidity changes by swelling or shrinking. This promotes shot-to-shot repeatability.
It may also interest you to know that this Remington 700 Alpha 1 stock material, carbon fiber, is much stronger than steel in terms of strength to weight ratio; it’s roughly five times stronger than steel for its weight.
Pachmayr Recoil Pad
Made of quality materials including leather, the Pachmayr recoil pad present on this Remington bolt action rifle provides added stability; and featuring a decelerator material that absorbs recoil, it is designed to improve the shooter’s target acquisition and follow up performance, whether at the range or out in the field.
Elite Hunter Timney Trigger
The Remington Alpha 1 Elite Hunter trigger is one which every of its components has been engineered by Timney to improve your accuracy. Featured on it is the manufacturer’s Sear Engagement Adjustment Lock design (SEAL’d) that ensures a user-friendly experience, and it delivers a crisp, clean pull every time with a fully adjustable pull weight of 2 – 4 lbs.
Bear in mind that each and every Timney Trigger is individually tested and calibrated by hand in the action it was designed for before delivery.
Trigger Guard
The Remington 700 Alpha 1 features an Oberndorf-style trigger guard – or Oberndorf bottom metal – which is one that incorporates a swing down blind magazine bottom (to which the follower and follower spring attach), and a bottom latch that is located inside the trigger guard, and which is activated when pushed with the trigger finger.
