Super Redhawk Additional Information
Brief History
The Ruger Super Redhawk 44 Magnum revolver debuted in 1987 and is based off the dependable Redhawk double action revolver design from the late 70’s. Originally, the firearm was offered in 7.5-inch and 9.5-inch barrel lengths; chambered in the top hunting cartridge of the time (the .44 Rem Mag); and sold in three finishes: blued, semi-gloss and high gloss.
However, in 1997, Ruger expanded the Super Redhawk line by including the .454 Casull in a new target grey finish, and later on in 2003, the .480 Ruger. These two new calibers offered different dynamics for handgun shooters with high pressure loads. But, despite the appeal of these additional calibers, most seasoned handgun hunters still preferred to stick with the classic .44 Mag due not just to its proven performance, but also to the fact that the ammo is readily available.
More recently, Ruger began to offer this Red Hawk gun in 10mm, and this new caliber was, of course, also welcomed by die-hard fans of the handgun line.
Frame
The Ruger Super Redhawk 44 Magnum revolver features a quite substantial frame that houses all of the fire-control parts, including the springs that power the hammer and trigger. To make it fitter to handle powerful, big game loads, this strong frame features extra metal in the sidewalls, barrel mounting areas, as well as top strap which is wide enough to provide space for grooves to be cut for Ruger scope rings.
Unlike similar hunting revolvers like the new Colt Anaconda that comes with a drilled and tapped topstrap, the Super Red Hawk features patented integral mounts which are directly machined onto the solid-steel barrel rib to ensure a stable mounting surface for the included scope rings, and eliminate a potential source of looseness and inaccuracy in the field.
Designed to securely fit into dovetails on the frame, the scope rings in question serve as a recoil lug for both of the mounts, and do not slide to the rear when the firearm recoils.
Bear in mind that the Ruger Super Redhawk frame not only features an underlug to protect the ejector rod, but also uses a full-frame extension to cover the ejector and provide extra support to the barrel. At the point where it screws into the frame, this extension covers an additional 2 inches of barrel, making the joint remarkably strong.
Grips
The internal recoil cushion which comes with the Hogue Tamer Monogrip that this Super Redhawk 44 Magnum revolver features is positioned under the web of the hand, and is added to help reduce the impact of powerful loads such as the firearm is chambered for. The grips themselves are attached to a single stud which extends from the bottom of the frame.
Bear in mind that the peg-style grip frame easily accommodates custom grips as well.
Barrel
The Ruger Super Redhawk barrel is fairly straight, thick (measures about 0.910 inch at the muzzle), sports a nice-looking crown, and features a concave surface which protects the rifling further.
![Super Redhawk Barrel Muzzle](https://armsintel.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/03/rsr-barrel-muzzle.png)
The remarkable accuracy that the firearm is popular for is thanks to the cold hammer-forging process that this barrel went through. Cold hammer-forged barrels boast ultra-precise rifling that promote not just exceptional accuracy, but also longevity and easy cleaning.
The sturdy 44 Mag Ruger barrel which tube is nearly one quarter of an inch thick is, of course, further reinforced by the frame extension.
Cylinder
The cylinder of this firearm has thick walls and is somewhat large, even though it has flutes. The insertion of cartridges into this cylinder is quite a smooth process thanks to the chamfered chamber mouths.
For solid lockup, a large bolt protrudes deeply into the Ruger Super Redhawk cylinder, and the pin which expectedly protrudes from the ejector star into the breech face provides additional lockup. A lever projects forward from the crane into the frame as well.
In other words, the triple-locking cylinder is locked into the frame at the front, rear and bottom, and this is to ensure more positive alignment and dependable operation shot after shot.
Bear in mind that this Super Redhawk 44 Mag revolver cylinder is dual chambered, which allows it to accept factory .44 Special cartridges as well. .454 Casull models also accept factory .45 Colt cartridges due to this dual chambering.
Transfer Bar Safety
Thanks to its transfer bar safety mechanism, you can safely carry the Super Redhawk 44 Magnum while its fully loaded, with no worries of an accidental discharge. This safety is basically a bar connected to the trigger, and which lies between the hammer and firing pin, effectively stopping the tip of the hammer from being in contact with the primer of the chambered cartridge when the hammer is at rest.
Recommended Ammunition
For Ruger Super Redhawk ammo that is spot on accurate, powerful enough, and which offer great expansion when used on game like white tail deer, elk and mule deer, consider the following:
- Hornady XTP 240 Grain Jacketed Hollow Point (JHP) Ammo
- PPU PPH44MH 44 Mag 240 grain Jacketed Hollow Point Ammo

“THIS PISTOL SHOOTS GREAT. The kick is not as bad as some people have said. I shoot 45 Long Colt and the 454 Casull . I find it very enjoyable to shoot. And I would tell people to buy this pistol.”

“I’m really enjoying this revolver and looking forward to using it for a hog hunt this fall. It’s to bad the 480 Ruger never gained more popularity because it’s more powerful than a 44 Magnum with not much more recoil. I’m loading up 385 grain LFN Bullets to around 1100 fps with amazing accuracy.”
