Springfield Echelon Description
With its introduction, the Springfield Armory Echelon Pistol has set a new standard for modern, striker-fired duty pistols. This is so as it has been engineered with superior ergonomics; built to withstand the harshest conditions thanks to a robust stainless steel chassis and high-quality finish; and fortified with a host of patent-pending features.
Speaking of features which are still patent pending, this modular Echelon Springfield Armory offers comes ready for action with a Central Operating Group (COG) that is completely self-contained and serialized, and which robust housing allows it to be easily moved between grip modules in no time.
There’s also the Variable Interface System (VIS) which achieves a low, direct mount optics solution for improved sight picture and intuitive alignment. This revolutionary optics mounting system offers unparalleled adaptability with a broad range of optics; in fact, you can direct mount over 30 optics to the Springfield Echelon slide without adapter plates, thanks to the Variable Interface System.
The optic-ready slide itself is billet machined from, finished with Melonite®, and sports aggressive serrations which ensure a positive grip while racking the slide even with wet or gloved hands.
Factory-installed atop this slide is a tritium/luminescent sight at the front, and a tactical rack U-Dot™ sight at the rear, and you can rest assured that the tritium-powered U-Dot™ sight picture of the Springfield Armory Echelon is intuitive, accurate, and fast. The sights are also mounted high to superimpose through the window of whatever optic the user chooses to mount.
By default, the pistol comes with a medium-size grip module installed; however, small and large modules are also available, and the three interchangeable backstraps that ship with the Springfield Echelon will fit all three modules.
Taking inspiration from some of their other popular pistol offerings, like the Hellcat and 1911 DS Prodigy, the manufacturer has applied their Adaptive Grip Texture to common indexing points on the frame and on the takedown lever; this pattern helps to ensure a comfortable, secure grip on the Springfield Armory Echelon Pistol in any condition.
Built into the frame in front of the trigger guard is a four-slot Picatinny rail which allows you to further customize the handgun with aftermarket accessories such as lights and lasers.
Also featured is a flat face trigger with a pull weight below four pounds; this trigger performs impressively and comes standard with a blade safety integrated. In addition to this trigger safety, the Springfield Echelon boasts an internal safety, which is the unique second sear design of its COG that helps to prevent unintentional discharge in case it is dropped. This design exceeds the SAAMI drop test.
Two (1) magazines come standard: (1) 17-round & (1) 20-round, OR (2) 10-round mags in states with magazine limits; and the magazine release – as well as the slide release – is ambidextrous, because the Echelon Springfield Armory pistol was built with right as well as left-handed users in mind.

Springfield Armory Echelon Additional Information
Modular Design
The Springfield Echelon 9mm unique modular design is centered around its Central Operating Group – the serial numbered part of the gun – that houses the trigger, striker, and all operating components that make the gun fire and cycle:
![](https://armsintel.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/11/echelon-cog-300x235.webp)
By the way, everything in this COG has been precision-machined to ensure smooth and flawless operation.
As the Springfield Armory Echelon Pistol is slated to be available in three sizes (Compact, Mid-size, and Large or Full-size), the COG is designed to be easily swapped from one frame size to the other, and doing so requires no tools.
To uninstall the COG from the frame, all you have to do is to remove the takedown lever, lift the two slide lock levers, and push the COG forward. After it has been pushed forward, you can then lift the Springfield Echelon COG out of the frame.
Recoil System
This firearm features a captive recoil system, meaning that the recoil spring assembly includes a guide rod surrounded by a recoil spring which is “captured” between a base at one end of the guide rod, and a body at its opposite end. In this setup the body is shaped to engage the spring at one or more sectors, leaving the remaining sector(s) free to engage the slide.
The Springfield Armory Echelon captive recoil system offers a significant advantage when it comes to the assembly and disassembly of the pistol for cleaning or repair, as the recoil spring will not become a projectile when it is compressed and unconstrained during disassembly, unlike a recoil spring that is not captive with the guide rod.
Slide
In addition to the aggressive serrations on both its back and front, the slide on the Springfield Echelon boasts other features that are desirable.
The front of the slide has a shelf located just forward of the ejection port, in addition to a forward trench that assists shooters who charge or press-check their firearm from the front of the slide while keeping the hands clear of the action. It is also tapered to aid in holstering.
The rear of the Springfield Armory Echelon Pistol slide comes with its edges flared outwards, somewhat in a wing-like fashion, and this makes the process of racking the slide very much easier.
To top it all off, the slide locks are designed to be very small and easy to push up to lock the slide to the rear.
Slide and Barrel Finish
Melonite®, the finish used on the Springfield Echelon slide and barrel, is one great at preventing or resisting rust and other forms of corrosion. It hardens the steel it is used on, ensuring durability that is unparalleled.
Box Contents
Two magazines; a mag loader; a mag extension for the shortest mag; extra palm swells or backstraps; and a soft-sided, double-zipper SA case, ship with the Springfield Armory Echelon. Inside the case, the firearm and any mounted accessories will stay protected during transportation. There’s also an interior pouch included to hold an extra mag.

“I own Springfield Armory Hellcats. The Pro is my preferred carry. The Echelon is different. Its features make it a dream to shoot. It is the most versatile Handgun I have ever owned. At least 30 different red dot sights will fit. The trigger group can be removed and placed in a different frame. A rear night sight is available. Ambidextrous controls for the slide release and magazine release. 10,17 and 20 round magazines available. I have 200 rounds through and am happy, its a shooter. I will update my review after 500 rounds.”

“Ole scol vet , and I havent bought a pistol made in this century. All my S&W 3rd gens have kept me safe and sound for ever. I was looking for a new pistol for my wife. It had to be light, hold a bunch of ammo and be able to bolt on a green dot. I love the low bore axis on the slide like those CZs. Keeps the barrel on target. I mounted a Holosun 507 ex on it, an let my wife fire it first. She shot more in one day than she did all year. This gun fast and sweet. Love it.”

“I just shot this new Springfield pistol this morning at a demo shoot. I haven’t bought it (yet), but for a first time shoot I got a nice tight 10 round grouping at target center (at 20 ft, indoor range). I impressed myself, and that doesn’t happen every day. The gun felt very good in my grip, well balanced, sweet to shoot. The double stack mags give either 17 or 20 rounds capacity. This is definitely a gun I will be watching to purchase.”
One more detailed review of the Springfield Echelon:
![](https://armsintel.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/11/eche-rev4.png)
“I wondered if this pistol was any good since it had such a large following out of the gate. I wasn’t sure if that was because it’s “new” or the appearance of the gun’s design is well done, or that it’s acutally a great pistol?! I wasn’t sure, so I did what most people do, go the YouTube, and watched what others think of the firearm. The reviews on this pistol were outstanding but you never know if that’s because the person reviewing it got the gun for free and if it’s an honest review. I took the chance anyway and purchased this firearm, I was happily surprised. One of the first things I noticed right off the bat is it wasn’t overly heavy and the ergonomics on the grip or frame was superb. Ended up putting a arm or footprinted optic red dot on the top of the slide from Swamp Fox optics. The justice red dot is the exact optic I installed on this pistol and I could not be happier. The best way to describe how well this pistol is made and the ergonomics are so good!”
